EP means Electro Plate.
The crown I dont know.

I have never seen the "E" and "P" separated like this before only "EP" or "EPA1" or "EPNS" etc. Also I didn't read the first letter as an E until you poited this out! This crown mark is certainly not English, so did other countries use the English term Electro Plate ?

Hi,

To my knowledge the letters E P, in combination with other letters or symbols, to indicate electro plating were/are commonly used in the UK, USA and Canada but also in Germany like; B.E.P.W.F for Berliner Elektroplate Waren Fabrik.
I agree with ‘Hose’, the crown between EP (Gothic letter type) stands for electro plate and perhaps made in the USA.
Here is a list of clues. If you see one or more of these designations on your piece, it may very well be silver plate.

Forgot to add; the figures 60 & 90 could indicate plated item.
Also plated items are without any legal silver assay (hall) markings.

Very good information!
Just pay attention that not all "EP" is electroplated. For example Emile Puiforcat (well known French master) and Etienne Pasteur (French glasses) use it as mastermark.

Plated or silver? This question causes almost endless discussions. Please keep in mind that there are no national or international standards whatsoever on how a plated item should be marked. Its marking is a complete jungle. As to Zilverik's comment about EP being a master's mark. Yes, it is true, but in such a case there are other marks indicating silver. If an object is in silver, the marks show it clearily! Here is an additional list of what names an one way or the other plated item can carry:

I don't agree with "gotich letter are always - and I say always - and someone say not - but i repeat alwayes = plate is some kind." See the yearletters from the Netherlands around 1900 and for another example the Belgian import mark 1831-1868. All very authentic silver and not plate.

Well Eric, I tend to share Hose's opinion. Moreover this particular case shows two typical Gothic letters EP and that is 99,99% ElectroPlated. By the way, the Belgian import mark , the stylistic Gothic E (étrangere), shows only foreign origin and that the import duty is paid. Please also keep in mind that the electroplaters did all in their power to in a way "legally deceive" ordinary people to believe that an electroplated object would be silver. In England they even used a crown as a mark, but that was later forbidden (1897) because people fell in this "trap" believing it to be a silver mark. They also used the same number of punches almost similar to silver punches. All in all, EP=plated!
