Italian Silver jigger? or Snuffer?

Post by lidlladeebug »

I tried as hard as I could to get a picture of the hallmark, but it is so faint, it would not come out. It looks like a capital M with a P going through the middle of it. They are the same size letters. Next to it all it says is ITALY in all caps. I do not know if this is a snuffer or a jigger. Maybe something else. Did the mustard test on it and it looks like it's pure silver. Anyone else ever come across this mark?

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

If you cannot capture an image of the mark, try drawing what you see and post a photo of that.

In the meantime, have a look at this post, it's currently very much a work in progress, but see if any of the trademarks may be a match.

It's a double jigger, the handled form like yours is fairly common from the mid 20th century to present, in various metals and handle materials. Have seen the conjoined MP or PM ITALY mark on quite a few items, they've all been silverplate, some with wear showing a brass base. There would a mark indicating so, if yours were solid silver: http://www.925-1000.com/Fitalian_marks_01.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The "mustard test" indicating "solid silver" is an example of rapidly spread misinformation on the internet; mustard is one of any number of substances (eggs, mayonnaise, onions, wool, latex, oak, etc.) that will, with varying speed, produce tarnish/silver sulfide on both solid silver and silverplate (electroplating deposits a thin layer of fine silver on a base metal).

I don't see it in any of the forums. I've been looking for the same hallmark for a few weeks, literally. I have searched every term I can think of to search it. Thank you for verifying it was a jigger as well! I drew it out as best I could, it's a pretty close match :). I apologize if it's just silver plated and I am in the wrong forum.
Also, what about using ice to test it? I have also read that if you put ice on something and it takes less than 10 seconds to make an entire piece cold, then it's likely silver, but if it takes longer, it's other materials?
