The marks are very worn and it is difficult to see what it reads. Nonetheless, I'm willing to make a wild guess. What I can say almost for sure is the following: The object is made in Stockholm Sweden in 1858 and of course in 830/1000 silver. And now the guess: The maker could be Pehr Fredrik Palmgren 1850-1878. His mark was P.F.PALMGREN and PFP. But is it him, who knows? He was born in Österbybruk 13.10.1820, became journeyman 4.8.1838 and master 12.3.1850. He died 14.10.1878.

No problem, you're welcome. But sorry, but I don't quite catch you. What do you mean by "signed", engraved or what? Show me some photos. If it is engraved no photos are necessary, the name has no "meaning". It is probably the former owners name only.
I'm afraid that this is not an evaluation forum. It is against the rules. Ask a respectable auction house or pawn shop.

Ah, how stupid of me, of course there is. I took a look. It is the owner's inscription only. Unfortunately such inscriptions affects usually the value but more seldom in a positive way on the contrary. It also depends of is the inscription from the same period or later made. If it is much later made it bad really bad. What also affects the value is how big and/or where the inscription is, not to mention what is is. The bigger and the more visible decrease the value. In general engraved inscriptions are difficult matters to deal with (not good).

Hi All,

It is all not that bad. Cheer up!
Personalized silver has its charm, although in this case the name has been put prominently and not inscribed in a special cartouche.
Options; if the name does not border you leave it like it is. Otherwise go to a silversmith and discuss with him the possibility to have the name removed. Depending on material thickness and deepness of the inscription, it might be not too hard and expensive, to have the name removed.
You also could find out more about your C. J Widman and go from there and perhaps sell it back to a Widman.
Whatever you do, with today’s silver prices, the item has a certain scrap value. The choice is yours.

Regards,

Oel

I have seen another one of these recently that weighs 930 grams and is described as an "ART NOUVEAU SWEDISH STERLING SILVER CENTERPIECE & TOP." The maker mark is "CH," and it was made in 1855 (A5 is the date code), which obviously is too early for the accepted era of Art Nouveau. I hope this info in some way helps you understand your wonderful piece; the inscription on yours is part of its history, so I hope you leave it. This form/type of object was obviously popular in Sweden in this era.
