Need help with silver markings on brooch

Post by Marie620 »

Hi. Me again. Second time posting here, but a new item. I have aquired this brooch, I can not read the markers mark , it looks like the first inital is rubbed or worn away, but the rest of it says Bro's. Can you help with the maker.

It also has a strange mark inside the back of the brooch. Any idea what that is??

The bottom markings are for Birmingham, the anchor, the lion and an (L) Although I am not positive of the date. Can you help?? Any idea the meaning of the design on the brooch? Wheat and sickle...??

Thanks for your help.

I am sorry in advance if these are too big again, I am not sure how to make them smaller.

The year letter looks "t" for 1918. I didn't find the maker's mark on the pictures.

Thanks Rauls. Do you have any idea what the stamp is in the center of it? Also the makers mark is at the very top and very hard to see, all I can make out is BRO's , it looks as if there was once a letter before the Bros part but it is rubbed so badly I can't make it out. Any idea of what _ Bros would have made something like this going back to that date?

Thanks again for your help.

I am posting a couple more pics, 1 of the marks and 2 of the Maker ....to see if that helps.

I have finally figured out what the stamp was in the middle ( a lion) is that normal to be stamped there as it is also stamped next to the anchor and letter ( date mark)?

Hi Marie,

A possibility may be Sydenham Brothers, they were known makers of silver brooches.

Thanks Trev!! Now that I have got two questions answered which is great...I am still stuck on the third. The date. I am nearly certain that it's an L letter.. But I can't tell if it's 1783 or 1935? I am guessing the later, but am not positive. Any help?? Thanks again !!

If the date letter is "L", it should be 1935, in 18c the maker's mark should be initials only as far as I known.
