Please help with date on brooch

Post by Marie620 »

Hi. I have this brooch marked JG&S I am pretty sure it is John Grinsell & Sons Birmingham , I am struggling to get the correct date. I am guessing it is 1911 although the m doesn't look the same because of the swirly bit at the top of the letter.. and the one it does match is 1886 however there is no queens head stamped on the brooch.

Could anyone please clarify the date for me? Thank you.

I meant to mention, that as there is often confusion as to the striking of the Duty mark on underweight pieces, the below post may be of interest.

Hi Trev,

Thank you so much for clearing that up for me, especially since I had the maker wrong as well. Good article thanks that would explain why I thought it matched that year, but was missing the head. Really appreciate the information!
