Help identifying maker on my teapot w/ photos.

Post by crownjl »

I have a teapot and I do not know much about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think it is European. The link below will show photos. Thanks!

Your silverplate teapot or coffeepot was made by Elkington, Mason & Co. of Birmingham, England. The mark was used from 1842-64. Elkington was the rare silverplate manufacturer that used date marks, the bottom diamond-shaped mark in picture 1 should have either a number or letter for the date. If you can make that out, we should be able to tell you the year it was made.

There is an X inside the diamond. There is also a W or M stamped on the bottom just to the left of the three marks that are in a row. There is also the number 2397 above the E&Co mark. Does this help?

"X" in the diamond would indicate that the piece was made in 1862, "2397" should be a style or catalog number, don't know about the other letter.
