Please help me about this ring

Post by Maki »

Hi there

I bought this ring recently and it's quite mysterious for me.
Hallmark is only three crowns in oval shape and I already researched it means "Import to Sweden between 1913-1988".
But the ring looks quite old like early 19th century.Setting is silver and shank is 18K gold.Diamonds are foiled back by silver and back of setting is foiled back by gold. Closed setting is like scallop like early 19th century. Jeweler said technique is quite old.
I bought from a person who is living in Sweden.
Swedish import mark never be used before 1912? I am very wondering about my ring because it really looks early 19th century.
Please give me advice!!

It is 19th century and whoever takes an item to the assay office for testing will have this mark struck,at least in many countries.
Just do not try any repairs on it (soldering e.g)because rose-cut diamonds will pop out if heated. The backing may tarnish but leave it.

Hi AG2012

Thank you for your advice!!
Swedish import mark was used between 1912-1988.Hallmark of the ring is Swedish import mark.
So do you think it can happen that someone took the ring to Swedish assay office to punch import mark in 20th century though it was made in 19th century?
But for what? I would like to know reason you think the ring is 19th century:-)
I began to think maybe my ring is reproduction because I found many excellent reproductions and they were really well made.
They were quite similar construction as Georgian diamond ring.Closed back setting, silver diamond setting, diamond was foiled back by silver, back of silver setting was also foiled back by gold and it was like scallop pattern....
though it's sad because I thought my ring was made in 19th century...:-( But if there is certain reason that is Georgian diamond ring,I am so happy!!

Cannot tell for Sweden but people often want their silver or jewelry tested at the assay office. One does not need to be an importer to ask for it.
The ring is old,19th century;the way it is made, settings are worn and one prong - claw - in the setting is missing. There are reproductions but one cannot imitate what time does in more than 100 years.Just be careful with it - not even ultrasound cleaning.Use a toothbrush carefully from time to time.
