Knowles and Ladd article?

Post by brighteyes70s »

Greetings! I had a question for either Stanley Hayes or perhaps someone else who may be able to answer this.

It is in reference to the following article:

http://www.925-1000.com/a_Knowles&Ladd.html

Anyway, a few months back I was lucky enough to acquire a "Strawberry" pattern sugar spoon (Shell bowl), which has the seller name of N. Hardin & Co. on the back of it in addition to the word Coin. According to the following web site, the Newell Harding Co. was in business in Boston from 1830-1860. Is this accurate?

http://www.925-1000.com/americansilver_H.html

Because it sort of conflicts with the dates in Stanley's article when it was stated that, as an example, the Ivy pattern has been found with the N. Harding backstamp and it is said to have began production in 1868. Do the trade catalogs that were referred to that were produced by Knowles and Ladd in 1879-1880 actually have the origin date of the Ivy pattern as well as other patterns?

Anyway, I'm just trying to get the dates right here for my spoon since I'm getting conflict information. Thanks!

:)

While the firm's founder Newell Harding died in 1862, the firm was carried on under his name by his sons into the 1880s.

Newell Harding is listed as a silversmith in Boston directories as early as 1823.

That's about when Newell Harding came of age.
