Silver Box. Makers mark?

Post by CathJ »

Hi,
Firtsly I must thank you for this great forum with lots and lots of good and clear information.
I have been reading for a few days now and found answers on many questions I had regarding this box and other silver objects. Especially thanks to Oel, who made me look more closely to find 2 more marks that I had missed on my box.
Here' s some pics to show the marks on the box.
So far I found as follows:
Lion passant with number 2 under it = .833 silver content
Letters HH in square = H. Hooijkaas
Image
Minerva helmet with letter M = Schoonhoven assay office
Image
Tiny little stamp with letter L = 1921

Then there is another little mark that looks like a V in a C and the number 2 in the middle.

Does anyone know what this mark stands for? Makers mark?

Thanks in advance,
Cath:-)

Hi Cath, welcome to the forum and thanks for your friendly words.

C over V with the number 2 is the assayer’s mark for; C. Vreedenburgh Jr(Junior)., assayer in the city of Schoonhoven during 1920/1927

Best,

Wow, that is quick...
Do you think there will still be a makers mark somewhere on the box for me to find?
Thanks for your quick response!

Hi Kath,

I believe you have a 'full bingo cart' but do I see another little mark on the barrel?

By the way, I forgot to mention that the number 2, in the assayer’s mark of C. Vreedenburgh Jr indicated silver; 2nd standard or 833 fineness.
Mr. Vreedenburgh had five assayers' identification marks ; C over V without a number for general use. C over V with the number 1 for; gold(916) and silver (934) 1st standard, with the number 2 for; gold (833) and silver (833) 2nd standard, with the number 3 for; gold (750) third standard and the number 4 for; gold of 4th standard or 583 fineness

Yes, that looks very obvious that 'hole' in the barrel. But no, I can't see anything that looks like a mark.
I even took an old toothbrush and some jewelers liquid to clean the tarnish off. The hole is just what it is.. No raised marks or anything. I think the picture depicts the man sitting on an empty barrel. Hence the stop that is 'missing'.
I am very happy with what I learned so far though..and so quick..:-)
I will buy a new loupe and give the search another go. They were surely good in hiding their marks.
If I find anything new, I'll post it here.

Regards, Cath:-)

Your are right, hence the missing stop!
