12 Loth Spoon Set w/ Unknown Mark

Post by Kilr0y »

Hey all

Amateur silver collector here, this is my first post. I have a set of 5 nicely designed spoons which I believe are old German, 12 loth. I thought this might be a good place to come to help me identify this mark. This is the best shot I can get. It's a very small mark, with either the letters VR or VH and then a symbol which could be an old Prussian state and the number 12. The symbol could be a bird too I suppose. I cannot find anything like it in the pre-1886 info. Any brilliant folks out there?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Perhaps it also could be a French silver-plate mark, combined with the amount of silver used in the plating process, 12 Gr.

Hello, agree with Oel, neither German nor Lot, but French plate. Is that a lion besides the letters ? Dimly remember having seen the mark before, possibly a Paris department store. But currently I am too far away from my printed sources ... Regards, Bahner

It is definitively silver plate and the numbers used are interesting. Different numbers are seen in same flatware sets. I wondered why. It seems thicker silver plating was used in items subject to much wear, less silver in flatware with less wear. Fair enough.
