Good day to all of you,
I am puzled by a hallmark on a footed silver bowl. The bowl was once imported before 1988 into Sweden and got the 3 crowns in an oval and the "S" in a hectagon. These two hallmarks are placed on the rim of the foot on the outside.
The marks that puzle me are placed under the foot and out of sight. They are a "835" what stands for purity as far as i can tell and allthough the Scandinavian country's use alot of 830 silver i do not think this item is of that origin (but please prove me wrong) but German.
The second mark is a lion rampant but without any shield or frame and allthough i have found several of these lions they allways were accompanied by the German half moon and crown.
As we look at the bowl itself it would be, in my humble opinion, made in the 1st part of the 20th century, Art Deco but i have been fooled before thinking Art Deco and the item was late 19th century!
If anyone could help me placing this item i would surely be very greatfull.
Many thanks in advance,
Jean

Hello, looks like the lion of Deyhle from Schwaebisch-Gmuend, Germany. This can be dated around 1960, give or take a few years. Best wishes, Bahner

Hello Bahner,
Yes i agree the lion looks like the mark of Deyhle but my question then would be why is the piece not stamped with the crown and half moon? Surely items from this period had to be stamped with these markings!?

Hello, yes there should be halfmoon and crown, but hallmarking laws were and are not strictly followed in Germany, as there is no (and never was a) central assay office to control what people were doing, hallmarking-wise. Best wishes, Bahner
