1892? Danish Spoon

Post by Shofner303 »

I recently acquired a wonderful and very old spoon which I believe to be Danish though I am not 100% sure as I have never seen one like it before. It looks like it might be from 1892 based on the hallmark but again, not sure. My main question is what does the (R) and (S) marks stand for? Are they initials or do they have separate meanings of their own? I am dieing to find out who made this spoon as the craftsmanship and detail are really quite spectacular.

Hi welcome to the forum,

Yes, top image; Danish Assay Office Mark or control mark the triple tower castle above waterlines in an oval frame-shape, the two digit number appearing in the wavy water lines below the three towers is an indication of the year of assay. Bottom image right; Warden or Guardian mark Danish Assay office in Copenhagen, SG conjoined for; S. Groth on duty during 1863-1904.
Bottom image left; maker’s mark initial(s) but not clear to me/ unknown. For more information see;

Ah so it must in fact be from 1892 if that is indeed a "92" stamped there. Does anyone know who the metal master might be?

R P F B are possible letters - can you limit this to fewer?

I believe it must be a R or P

Single P and R are the most rare marks. I agree that R is the most likely. However R? R + one letter must be the case, I cannot find a match where R is placed in the cartouche as here.

On the other hand - less than 50% of Danish marks are in the literature.
