Indian silver box, help needed with hallmark

Post by niceguy1 »

HI ALL

I have this silver cigar box.

from research on this site & others it would seem to be the work of Hamilton & co of Calcutta, Bombay & Simla.

I also noticed that similar to British hallmarks the alphabet was used several times over, would anybody know to which year this letter n corresponds to?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

I wonder if all non-UK silver made in the empire and commonwealth that employed date letters in the 20th century followed the conventions of the London Assay Office. Birks of Canada certainly did from the 1930s until the 1970s.

If this is also true of Hamilton, N in this cartouche would correspond to 1948.

Without a photo of the entire piece, this is just a passing thought with nothing much to back it up, but perhaps it will get the ball rolling.
