Hello!
Recently I accquired this urn-shpaed nutmeg grater. It has been offered to me as 'Biedermeier 19th century'.
Since the item has no hallmarks at all, I wonder if any member of this forum can supply any information.
From my research on the net I found, that much urn-shaped nutmeg graters are more from the 18th century.
To find out of which material the item was made, I performed the 'Archimedes water test' to determine the
specific weight of the used metal. The test proved that it is 13-lot (loth) Silver, or 812/1000 silver.
I look forward to your comments.
Best regards
Rainer

It`s just beautiful and I would say either very early Biedermeier or late 18th century. They were still popular in early Victorian era.If British, I would say George III.Prices of nutmeg were artificially kept high by the Dutch in XVIII century, but it changed during Napoleonic wars. Nevertheless, nutmeg was still expensive in continental Europe;freshly ground to your glass of punch.13 loth speaks for itself.

Hello AG2012 for your information.
Does the shape of the urn maybe give some additional info about the period it was made?
Or even a hint to the counrty of origin or the maker?
I am still collecting info of the item.

Best wishes, Rainer

Difficult to tell exactly, but if Continental (13 loth) it`s definitively early Biedermeier, I would say well before 1840.Lovely simple decor.
