Where in the world?? Far East? Middle Eastern?

Post by NancyCaroline »

HI All,

This bracelet has no marks, high grade silver, gold overlay, turquoise. From an old estate. Unfortunately I had to clean, the pierced work was completely encrusted with old silver cleaner, really a mess.
Can anyone comment on where it might have been made based on style or imagery? Has fish, flowers, to me it looks Far East, but I haven't found anything in my searches with the pierced metalwork this has... Thanks in advance for your help.

Good Day Nancy,

Southeast Asia might be a better start. Read through www.925-1000.com/a_yogya.html and do click on the additional links there which you will enjoy.

Hope this helps.

Though I can't recall seeing a cuff bracelet like this before, to my eye, it looks very much like Indian Kutch-work (Sri Lankan silver also came to mind), believe I've seen the gold mounts before, but they do seem unusual to me, as well as the turquoise sets - eh, just musing on my part, really...

And a very good point Cheryl, that is a possibility we can't rule out. Believe that part of the gold decoration we are looking at is Buddhist. Would love to see the turquoise myself.

The turquoise is very off, non-original. All the work in the metal and then glue in some odd bits of blue stone... a major red flag.

Cheryl, I associate that emblem with Siam.

The three comma or teardrop emblem is a triskele or triskelion, some version of which is found in many cultures. In Asia, its mystical connotations probably began in India and then it traveled eastward and southward with the spread of Buddhism. For instance, it is still commonly seen in the roof-tiles of Buddhist temples in Japan.

That said, the bracelet looks to be of very recent manufacture, the kind of thing molded or cast, finished rather crudely by hand in northern India or Nepal, and left unmarked for good reason. If the OP has already tested it and found it to be high-grade silver, I would consider that to be a stroke of luck.

Regards,
DR

Thank you Cheryl & Warren for your comments & links. The www.925-1000.com/a_yogya.htmllink was very helpful, as was the Djokja - Techniek site.
Yes, it does test as silver. Interesting history lesson! Many thanks.
Best,
Nancy
