FM or JM - spoon 1718 Isle of Wight VA

Post by dorisann »

In a will that my 7 great grandfather left a silver spoon which he says in the will is marked with what looks like a backwards F or a J with a line through it and a M for the last initial - I'm trying to figure out the silversmith that would have been in the era of 1718 in Isle of Wight Co, Va - does any one know the mark - any help or guidance would be appreciated. I presume you don't have the spoon, or a picture of it.
There is no silversmith listed at that period in Isle of Wight Co, VA.
That doesn't mean there wasn't one, it just means there is none found so far.
Initial marks are very difficult to attribute to a particular silversmith, unless a lot of example turn up.
I also looked at all silversmiths with M as a last initial, nothing as you describe. I know the author of the Va book, but without an example, it wouldn't do much good to contact her.
Sorry,
Maurice
