Hello all,
We've been doing some research on a piece we recently acquired.
It took a while but we finally figured out that it was a Silver Figural Toothpick Holder.
We believe the marks are from Porto, Portugal but have seen some other things that indicate it could be from Brazil rather than Portugal.
We are hoping that someone can tell us if it is from Porto and if the date is from 1843-1853.
Also, we can't quite make out the complete makers mark and would love to identify the silversmiths name. We did find one reference but it said his name was unidentified.
Any additional info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Porto Portugal Silver Toothpick Holder
Re: Porto Portugal Silver Toothpick Holder
Hi there!
Quite a lot of the engraving (and claw feet) resembles that of an item I asked about here a few weeks ago (candlesticks from Brazil - I thought they were 'Sabbath candlesticks', they are in this forum). I believe that the maker may be the same (Jose Ferreira Guimaraes), who seems to have operated both in Portugal and Brazil. It would also seem that he used a number of different marks.
Hope that this helps!
Regards,
Adam

That one definitely resembles ours but looks like a different makers mark.
