Mappin and Webb
I would like to know more about Mappin and Webb. Anything anyone can tell me would be useful. Thanks! MG
Re: Mappin and Webb
Hi MG,
I think you would need to write a book to explain properly the history of Mappin & Webb and their associated companies, but as for Mappin & Webb themselves, here's a potted history: They were formed by John Newton Mappin, following his retirement from Mappin Brothers, and George Webb in 1859. The business was originally styled Mappin & Co., but owing to confusion with the firm of Mappin Brothers, Mappin & Co. were restyled to Mappin & Webb around 1863. George Webb died around 1881, and John Newton Mappin ran the firm alone until he was joined by Herbert Joseph Mappin in the 1890's. They were converted into a limited liability company in 1898 under the style of Mappin & Webb Ltd., the directors noted as John Newton Mappin, Herbert Joseph Mappin, Walter John Mappin, James Leaky, Walter Thorpe Haddock, Robert James Gibson, Herbert Lindley Howlden, and Stanley A. Mappin. In 1903 the business of Mappin Brothers was closed and amalgamated with Mappin & Webb Ltd. The firms history during the 20th century is a complicated one, with many new companies formed and changes in ownership, but the firm still exists today, albeit mostly as a retailer, and somewhat smaller in size than it's heyday in the 1920's, when its Sheffield operation alone employed a 1,000 workman.
