cloisonne-enamel spoon? (I think?)

Post by digitialgirl »

Hi I am new here - I don't really collect spoons but a few years ago I bought one because I thought it was pretty - I recently unpacked and found it again. It has no mark on it, but I am curious if it would be more Russian or Scandinavian in design (fake or not I cant tell)? I thought it might be a baby spoon but now I think sugar?

Sorry if they are silly questions - its really the only one I have as I don't collect stuff like it.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

It's a quite typical Scandinavian design. See: http://www.925-1000.com/david-andersen_X1.html

Are you sure there are no marks? They may be small and hidden.

Thanks, I wasn't quite sure because of where the handle joins the part you eat on has the flower things - I haven't seen any marks on it that's why I am not even sure if it is real looks old enough and the details are very nice and its heavy but there are plenty of fakes
Could you tell me if it is a sugar spoon? Or what kind it is? :D Im not very formal so I don't have more than ikea spoons in my drawer.

Im also curious why they would put pretty picture on the front rather than the back :o

It would be for tea or sugar. The design, I believe, is quite traditional, so I wouldn't describe it as a fake.

I have a dumb question and hate to reopen this - but was this kind of spoon ever mass produced? A dealer told me it was from about 1900-1920 and not Scandinavian but Russian and mass produced using cloisonné and said its worth 10 or so dollars so not worth insurance :)

It very well might be Russian but I don't see any mass produced ones from that time period or any later. Should I find someone else to look? After he said that I sort of tried to clean it so maybe it is worth 5 peanuts now :p -I see like a gold finish under what I assume dirt was so maybe it is brass or some gilt which is why not stamped? :D

Hi,

As the design was a popular one, I guess it may have well been made in a variety of metals to satisfy the demand of those who sought to purchase them.

Thanks! Yes I have feeling tho it is certainly scandianvian not russian because ironically, there was one other one listed that was the same exact - and the person said russian spoon with hallmark of JGK but the only JGK I find is norwiegen who did plique a jour (Johan G. Kjaerland) - so it looks like they had theirs labled wrong.

grr Im a bit annoyed because it was a reputable site I paid for eval and it looks like they copy pasted from a google query :(

thank you again :)
