IS Wilcox-Weber business card holder??

Post by thesilverplatestash »

What is this? It is approximately 4" (10 cm) long X 3" (7.5 cm) wide X 3/4" (2 cm) deep (not including handles). Is it a business card holder?

Image

The front (pictured) has a tiny lion standing on a crown, holding what appears to be a plate or bowl (or perhaps another, smaller crown?), engraved in the middle of it.

The back is hallmarked with three plumes attached to the top of a shield (not another crown), with a piece of ribbon coming out of each side of the shield. Underneath that it has the I S (International Silver) initials (boxed), and ever so faintly, a possible tiny hand to the upper right of those initials. Also, there appears to be a date or perhaps a name engraved or stamped between the shield/feathers mark and the I S initials, but even using a magnifying glass, I can't make it out. It appears to be more than random scratches, but I might be wrong. I may have to get a microscope for this one!

If necessary, I can post a not-so-good photo of the front lion, but I did not get a decent shot of the back. I can try again if it helps.

I have done some research and am wondering if this is an International Silver/Wilcox-Webber item (the hallmark appears to incorporate bits of both hallmarks), but why the lion would be on the front defeats me.

Thanks in advance,

Teresa

Hi Teresa,

If you find it impossible to capture an image of the marks, then draw what you see as accurately as possible, and post an image of the drawing.
