Hello,
the bearded man facing left = guarantee mark used during the period 1819-1838.
The figure 53 = department Meuse.
The old man facing right = mark for fineness .950.
The maker's mark M with a star over three dots is not known to me.
Regards.
Going through some old posts to see if some new research might be helpful.
The maker here is Jean-Baptiste Hubert Maussant:
Born: 3 Nov 1790, Sugny, Ardennes, son of Henri Augustin Maussant & Marie Berthe Charlier
Married: 3 Jun 1812, Bar-le-Duc, dept. Meuse
Mark Registered: 30 Sep 1816, Bar-le-Duc, dept. Meuse (M with a star above and three pellets below)
Died: 17 May 1833, Bar-le-Duc, dept. Meuse
Hope this helps!
