Charges of Fraudulent Bankruptcy. – Joseph and Frederick Bromage, manufacturing jewellers, of Summertield Crescent, were committed to the Assizes on the 22nd ult., by the Birmingham stipendiary, on various charges under the Bankruptcy Act. The defendants were charged that within four months of their bankruptcy they disposed of, other than in the ordinary way of trade, a large quantity of jewellery obtained on credit ; also with destroying and falsifying books and documents. W. F. Dick, jeweller and factor, late of Vyse Street, who had business relations with the other defendants, was also charged with various offences under the Bankruptcy Act ; but the case against him was not concluded, and will be continued. The three defendants will also be charged together with conspiracy to defraud.

Joseph Bromage entered his mark 'J.B' contained within an oblong punch with clipped corners, with the Birmingham Assay Office on the 4th June 1857 from the address of Warstone Lane, Birmingham. He described himself as a Jeweller in the registration.

Lanson Ltd. entered their mark with the Birmingham Assay Office in July 1933. In the early 1960's the business was acquired by A. Edward Jones Ltd. whose address appears at the top of the post.

The firm were also makers of plated wares.

Norton & White (Thomas Norton) also entered a mark with the London Assay Office


Another old member of the electro plate trade has gone to rest. Mr. White, for several years past, has been the sole remaining representative of Norton and White, Of Great Charles Street, and formerly a partner of Doley, White and Dale. He was well known on the road, and the productions of his factory were always well spoken of.

The firm has its origins in the firm of Peyton & Iles who were in business by 1840. Charles Iles Sen. (b.1812-d.1870) was in business by himself at the time of the Great Exhibition in 1851, where he exhibited his range of thimbles. Charles Iles Sen. died in 1870 at the age of 58 and the firm passed to his son, Charles Iles, who was born in 1852. Charles Jnr. continued the business, which appears to be mainly the manufacture of thimbles, and exhibited the firm's wares at the International Exhibition in Brussels in 1877.

In 1911 Iles was joined by his son-in-law, Alfred E. Cox, and it was he who continued the business following the death of Charles Iles jnr. in 1925. It was Cox who bought up the electroplate and souvenir business of Gomms.

Alfred E. Cox died in 1955 and the firm passed to his two sons, Alfred Basil Cox and Edward Brandan Cox.

The Factory in Highgate Street was compulsorily purchased by the City of Birmingham in 1962 and the company relocated to a new new Factory at Tyseley Industrial Estate, Seeleys Road, Greet, Birmingham.

Manufacture of crested souvenirs was discontinued in 1970 and the business acquired by Richard and Joan Mealings in June 1971.

Gomms entered their mark 'G'S' contained within an heraldic shield, with the Birmingham Assay Office.
