Indecipherable Hallmark
Indecipherable Hallmark
Grateful advice from anyone about the following set of three (3) hallmarks, all of which are square (or square/cut corners). They are on the reverse of a Royal Household enamel badge.
The first (1) hallmark is the correct h'mark for Birmingham (anchor, side on).
The third (3) hallmark is of a Lion Passant (facing towards the anchor).
Hallmark Two (2) is my problem. It looks like a crown or even a castle, but I can't find a match anywhere in my book on English Silver Hallmarks (Banister).
Finally, the words "Sterling" are also stamped on the reverse.
Any help, please?
Cheers,
GeoffD

Re: Indecipherable Hallmark
Thanks Trev: much appreciated.
Given my hopeless ineptitude with taking on-line shots, I'll get my son to sort it all out when he next visits us in the country from Sydney.
Will be in touch again with you soon.
Cheers,
Geoff C

Hi Geoff,
If you struggle to capture an image of the mark because of its size, draw as accurately as possible what you see and photograph the drawing.

Hi Geoff,
Not Birmingham, but Toronto.

Re: Indecipherable Hallmark
Trev,
Many thanks for the help: much appreciated.
I must say how surprised I am that the silver item is from Toronto. It's the last place I would have guessed.
Just one query, however: can you identify with ease the central hallmark (and is it the hallmark for which year?). I just wonder if it's a maple leaf under a D?
All kind regards,
Geoff

Dear Trev,
Renewed thanks for your speedy reply, and for providing me with such excellent and accurate information. I am most grateful, especially as I would never have guessed in my wildest dreams that the (British) Royal Household badge had been cast in Canada.
Sincerely,
GeoffD

Re: Indecipherable Hallmark
Hi Trev,
Seems a pity, from what you told me, that Canadian hallmarks do not include one for the date, unlike UK hallmarks which (usually) include one for dating the object in question.
Cheers.

Re: Indecipherable Hallmark
Hi Geoff,
It's not a hallmark, only a maker's mark that imitates the mark of the Birmingham Assay Office.
