Austrian Sugar Tongs

Post by silverfan »

Hi all,
recently I bought a sugar-tongs which looks Art Deco, but must be older, because it is marked with the dog head 1867-1922. The maker's mark looks like an anvil with two stars or two letters. Who is the maker and when and where he was ? All hints very appreciated.

Hi Silverfan,

I'm sure we'll all appreciate some close-ups of the marks.

that was the best pic of about ten. There is no space for the lens to get closer to the marks.
If the maker's mark is not an anvil, it could perhaps be a vase with handles.
In my first post I forgot the word "active"!

Hi all specialists in silver of Austria-Hungary,
with a small but strong pocket-lens I could see that within the dog-head mark there is a 3 for 800 fineness and a P for Pest. So the item must have been produced after 1871. The maker's mark is an anvil between the letters G or C and A. I hope with this information somebody is able to find the maker.

Hi,
I learnt that the dog-head mark in Hungary was in use until 1937, far longer than in Austria. So my surmise Art Deco becomes very probable.

Hello Bahner,
thank you very much for your answer. I have to explain the pics. The dog-head mark bears 3 = 800 and P = Budapest, which is not recognizable on the photo. The maker's mark bears a not discernible letter than an anvil and the letter M. Is there any literature where one could find this maker's mark?

Hello silverfan!
I think, there is no published literature about this or any other hungarian marks from this time.
I already saw this mark before, as I remember, the letters ar G and M. But I still don't know, who is it.
I will ask a friend, perhaps he know, but there is no much hope.
Best regards!
