Help with identification

Post by cobwebs »

Hello wise people, I need to find the origin, makers of a gorgeous set of fish knives and forks. I believe them to be 100 years old. Mark is W W & S. No other marls are visible. Handles are carved ivory and blades are engraved with each having a different scene. I will attempt to upload photos, bear with me.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

To my knowledge the mark is yet to attributed with any degree of certainty. However, although there were several 'WW's working in the trade, the only 'WW & S' I have ever noted was William Webster & Son of Sycamore Street, Sheffield, so I would tentatively attribute this work to them.

Thank you Trev, I was told it was M M & S but it looks like W's to me, what do you think?

Just for a comparison of the style of 'M' and 'W' Gothic letters, see the 1835 and 1845 date letters here:
