18th century spoons - amsterdam

Post by rat-tail »

Hi All - any help dating these early Dutch spoons would be appreciated. I presume they are from amsterdam and of first standard. The date letter is a u. Sadly the maker's mark is indecipherable on all four spoons, I've shot the best version. - many thanks Frank

Hi Rat-tail,

City mark of Amsterdam and the maker’s mark appear to be a fish facing left for; Andries Vis registered 1741-1799 in the year he died. Andries Vis has been a known maker of cast design silver spoons. Date letter, if we compare city mark and lion rampant in crowned shield (province mark 1st standard of silver) for date letter U is 1754 or 1779; I believe it to be the date letter U for 1754.

Oel.
