MPG
An example of the work and mark of the yet to identified 'MPG':
MPG - London - 1927
A vague possibility, with only the merest chance of likelihood and only mentioned here as a route for further research, is that 'MPG' may be the mark of M.P. Greengross & Co. (Morris Phillip Greengross) of Hatton Garden. Morris Greengross was a former President of the British Jewellers' Association, Vice-President of The Design and Research Centre, and twice Mayor of Holborn. He died in 1970, aged 77 years.

WALTER JAMES CARROLL
17 & 19, Beer Lane, Great Tower Street, and 20 & 21, London Street, Fenchurch Street, and 33, Walbrook, London
W.J.C - London - 1912
London, May 10.—The recent silver displays in the retail jewelry stores here have focussed the attention of the jewel thieves on this medium of value with the result that several clean-ups of silver have been made throughout the country the most important being that at the jewelry store of Messrs. W. J. Carroll, the Beer lane jewelers here. Nearly every article of silver of any value at all was cleared from this place the other night and carried away. All the glass show cases were emptied and every drawer in the place ransacked. An attempt had been made to force a large double-door safe. The attempt was unsuccessful, the safe being too much for the thieves. The jewelers are congratulating themselves on this fact since the safe contained diamonds of great worth. The silver goods stolen included every known specimen of the jeweler's art from valuable filigree work to chased and hammered articles, and watches and cigaret cases. Jewelers exhibiting high-class silverware in their window displays are now taking extra precautions with their goods since it is anticipated the jewel thieves may give silver a good run for a change from precious stones and gold goods. Messrs. Mappin and Webb, the big jewelers here who always make a big display of silver plate, have for some years taken the precaution of having uniformed guards strolling up and down the sidewalks that run two sides of their city store rooms.

Walter James Carroll entered his marks, 'W.J.C' contained in various cartouches, with the London Assay Office, on the 10th October 1907, 16th June 1908, and on the 27th August 1908.

Works
Officine: Romford, Essex.
General Notice.—This firm has been established over 100 years, and during the whole of that time has been engaged in the manufacture of silver and gold thimbles. Up to a year ago the Works were situated in Clerkenwell, but, owing to extending trade, it was found necessary to remove the Works to Romford, so as to follow out the modern idea of getting away from the congestion of thickly populated towns.
About nine months ago the firm took up the manufacture of a new thimble, viz., the " Trueform Thimble," which is an absolute departure from the old lines, in that it fits the finger end, and from the extensive business done in this thimble in this short time, it evidently fills a decided want. Besides the " Trueform " thimbles, they manufacture ordinary thimbles, and of these they make over 1,200 different patterns and qualities. For many years this firm has held the Contract for Bronze Tin-lined thimbles for the British Admiralty.
Description of Exhibit. — In the upper portion of the case are exhibited " Trueform " thimbles in their various sizes. Plain Holed, Plain Holed with Chased Border and Chased ; in the lower portion are ordinary thimbles and " London Dorcas " thimbles, as well as Steel Silver-Lined. For the benefit of those who do not know what a " London Dorcas" thimble is, it should be explained that it is a laminated thimble made up of three layers, the middle one being steel and the outer ones silver. They have also included among these ordinary thimbles some Steel Silver-Lined tailors' thimbles and Bronze Tin- Lined tailors' thimbles. The firm is open to deal with the foreign patents for the " Trueform " thimble.
