hi all, any help appreciated with this nice little necklace! the marks are, I think:
375 875 and a picture of an anchor and on the other side (too small to photograph)
2 teeny squares with (I think) a G and C in each square. also on the clasp:
375 9k
also, don't know if this is a real gemstone and seed pearls?

thanks loads, Louise

Hi Louise,

That would be 9 carat, assayed at Birmingham. Sorry I can't help with the maker.

two things:

because there are numerous goldsmiths there is duplication of initials and so they use different styles of letters, the cartouche ("frame" around the letters) etc. - the best thing will be to get a really sharp picture.

try this:
open scanner lid, set resolution as high as you can, hold catch down with finger and scan.

now use a program like irfanview to crop the catch but - if it is a good size, as it should be - do not change the pixel measurements.
if need be, go to "enhance colours" tab and fiddle around with it until you have as clear a picture as possible. then post and it should be helpful.

as to the stone and pearls, they appear to be real pearls but we can't test them - however, you can. rub one over your tooth. if it wants to make you scream because it is gritty and feels like fingernails on a blackboard - yes, it is a real pearl.

stone: too difficult to tell at this distance.
however: is there a hallmark or two (or 3) on the setting? any kind of mark?

please describe the stone - colour - is it same intensity front & back? when you look under bright light and move the stone do you see striping or banding?

hold against your skin (not when it has been lying where it is warm) is it icy cold, cool, or almost same temp as you? look at junctions of facets w magnifying glass. are they really sharp? is there variation in size and/or shape? does the large facet have a "dished" appearance?
let us know & we'll see what else we might be able to tell you.
