Additional information on Joseph Seymour spoon

Post by dcoatsworth »

I recently acquired this spoon sold by J. Coatsworth & Son (distant relative). Three of the marks on the back seem to attribute it to Joseph Seymour. Am I correct on this? Can anyone tell me what the 4th mark on the right means? Is it possible to narrow the date range on this? Joseph Coatsworth & Son started business in Galena, Ill around 1854, so i think it is later than that. (Although they did operate in Pittsburg, PA for a brief period before that.) This business carried on in Galena under 3 generations of Coatsworths until the early 1900's. If I can date this spoon more narrowly, I can figure out which generation sold it. Unfortunately, all 3 generations had names starting with 'J'.

Hello and welcome.

Yes, the flower/S/eagle mark belonged to Joseph Seymour & Company of Syracuse NY and was used c 1850-1887.
Don't recognize the fourth mark.

The firm was originally known as Joseph Coatsworth & Son.
Not sure when the son, James, took over.
James son Joseph Walton Coatsworth is your third generation.
Have got an idea for more info and will check it out next week.

The only additional information I could find was that the firm was still listed as J. Coatsworth & Son in the 1868-69 Galena City Directory.

You're welcome.

Since you are related to the Coatsworths, I thought you might like to see a couple of pictures I took monday.

First picture is of Joseph Coatsworth's building as it looks today. (The tan brick building).
It was rebuilt in the 1970's, but they tried to preserve the original appearance.

Second picture is of the plaque on the front of the building idenifying it as an Illinois State Historical Site.
In 1858 Joseph Coatsworth leased a ground floor shop, the basement and the third floor to J.R. Grant who was the father of President Ulysses S. Grant.
J.R. Grant operated a leather goods business. Ulysses S. Grant worked with his father there for about a year just before the Civil War started.

On the plaque it's called the Coatsworth Barrows Building.
Joseph Coatsworth purchased the land for the building from D.A. Barrows in 1854.
