Candlesticks Origin Help Needed Please

Post by andrewshane »

Hello all. I just purchased this gorgeous pair of candlesticks and was needing some help with the hallmarks. I checked the German section as well as the early French and numerous others with no luck. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. They are quite substantial. They measure 9 1/4" tall and weigh a massive 40.9 ounces. Enjoy the photos and thanks for any help you can provide.

Andrew

the crowned A indicates Paris, but you have 2 pieces containing 3 different crowned symbols.
I would guess that Hanau is where you should start, Hanau pseudomarks.

I don’t think so; these appear to be Dutch, from the city of Delft. The marks (in order):

Crowned “A” = Delft date letter for 1753 (or, less likely, given the style, 1778)
Crowned Delft arms = Delft city mark
D:G = maker’s mark of Dirk van de Goorberg, working in Delft 1747-1811
Crowned lion = fineness guarantee of .934

Dutch marks are faked, but these - and the candlesticks - look fairly convincing. But this is definitely the sort of thing that demands an expert's hand-on evaluation - photographs and verbal descriptions can only tell you so much.
