Gold Cufflinks - Help with Hallmark & Maker ID please

Post by marnski »

I need some help with the marks on this. 9K I know, but are the other two marks British assay and possibly a date mark? And the maker H. G & S? Thanks so much.

Hello,

The first of the four marks is the Chester Assay Office mark: the second and third are, as you thought, the 9ct gold marks. The light is falling a little awkwardly on the image of the fourth mark but it would be the letter mark for the year of assay. It looks like the peculiar script style "h" used in 1932-3.

In all probability the HG & S relates to Henry Griffiths & Son, manufacturing jewellers of Birmingham and Leamington, although the standard reference work for registered Chester makers' marks doesn't show exactly the one here.

Mike,

Thanks so much, I thought the last of the four marks looked kind of like a cat, or maybe a script "s". Oh well. I would have guessed '20's or '30's anyway, although they really do have a wonderfully modern look. Thanks again.
