Brazilian or Portuguese Matchbox?

Post by geniol »

I need to identify this matchbox hallmark, maybe from Brazil or Portugal?

Modern time Brazilian Matchbox - with Coat of Arms

Post by silverport »

Hello geniol

Please permit me a little correction of understanding: »Hallmark« is an Assayer’s Mark. It is a visual symbol, which herewith signed object is in conformity of rules for fineness. In the past time, it was struck in »Guild Hall’s« - hence the word »Hallmark«. So, all the other marks are »marks« only, but not »Hallmark«.

But the here shown marks aren’t in any conformity whoever of past or actual Portuguese rules for marking silver!

In case of your matchbox holder, it is struck maybe from their maker = »maker’s mark«.

Possible maker’s mark »IS« (in ligature) is in the form of long ago past centuries — but in that past time it was also very seldom in use in form of a ligature. From Brazil I know only some town marks — but not any maker’s mark.

The word »PRATA« is the Portuguese word for »Silver« — this mark with her very individual stylized letter types, is in the style of the 60-ties of past century. So I guess that your object is maybe made in Brazil in second half of last century.

These “big” matchboxes are in use from about second half of last century on.

The Coat of Arms could maybe a help, to find from which family in Brazil it comes from — maybe from Río de Janeiro? To get more knowledge of this, you must study basics of Heraldry. I advise you to take contact to a Heraldry Association.

Sorry that I couldn’t give you a desired answers.

Kind regards silverport
