Sheffield Silver Mark / Help to identify please

Hello, I wonder if you are familiar with the maker's mark on this piece of silver. 'RS' - 'Crown' 'Lion' 'q'. I'd appreciate any information, Many thanks, Shirley

Hi Shirley.

My copy of the Sheffield Assay Office Register shows a similar mark being entered at Sheffield on April 21, 1898 by Robert Stewart of Glasgow Scotland.

Not sure about your date letter G. Maybe another member can help us out on that.

Hi Pat, Thanks so much for that information. That looks exactly like the mark on my item.
(Incidentally, the date letter is a 'q' - as in 'queue' (not 'g')
I did find the 'q' date letter for Sheffield which was 1933 ? and the style seems to fit that year.
So is this item made by a Glasgow silversmith but hallmarked in Sheffield ? Is that quite normal ?

Many Glasgow silversmiths also had their marks entered at Sheffield.
I should probably mention that many London and Birmingham firms also entered marks at Sheffield.
Not an unusual practice at all.
