Hi Jon,
A quick Google search suggests a Scottish, and perhaps a much earlier Irish origin. Interestingly most modern sources show a different crest for the Hunter family, but I would still go with the one shown in my earlier post, this was taken from 'The Heraldry of Crests' a revised version of 'Elven's Heraldry' by John Peter Elven that was edited by H. Washbourn and published in 1829. Such books would have been the source of information for engravers working at that period and if Mr Hunter wanted his wine funnel engraved around that time, then I guess it would have been that crest that was applied.
