Hi
Have a silver gilded glass holder with 2 marks,
1)875 with hammer and sickle inside star with M alongside
2)KXK8 or KXK3
Am I correct in saying that the first mark indicates it is post 1958 875/1000 silver from Moscow?
The second mark I don't understand. From googling it seems to indicate the date of the piece. My questions are,
What does the KXK stand for?
Does the single numeral indicate decade and year? And if so how?
Sorry if this is stupid question, just would like to learn a bit:)
Thanks
Kieran
Soviet silver marks
Re: Soviet silver marks
Hi -
here is the explanation for your 2 marks:
1) M = townmark - here Moscow, star with hammer and sickle = assay mark of the Soviet Union in use since May 7th 1958, 875 = silver content 875/1000
2) KXK3 = Kubatschinskij Chudoschestwennij Kombinat 1961-1968 = Cuban artistic kombinat (Cuba was a socialistic "friend country" of the USSR) = manufacturer
3 = year of production = 1963

Re: Soviet silver marks
Mind my saying, but this item has nothing to do with Cuba, not even close. The Kombinat (factory) is located in Midrussia in a place called Kubatschinsk. If it were from Cuba, one should read "Kubanskij..." and not Kubatschinskij.
Have a nice day
PS. Sorry Postnikov :-)

Re: Soviet silver marks
Hello !
I just like to put everything right. KXK is realy Kubachinskiy Khudozestvenniy Kombinat. But the word "Kubachinskiy" (declension) came from small village Kubachy in Caucas mountains, Dagestan, USSR (Russia).
Dagestan is one of russian states (still), border with Chechnia.
There is also such russian region (province) Kuban' (different place), declension - Kubanskiy.
KXK is famous for it niello gilded silver.
I woud like to write more, but not in my english, so just put the word Kubachi on google and...
