Need help identifying pattern please

Post by BetsyHite »

I have this set of Silver and I cannot figure out where it is from or what it is actually. I cannot find the marks, obviously I don't know what I am looking for. The handles on the knives are fake bone, bone or ivory. Some of the knives do have splits in the handles. The knives are marked differently from the spoon and the forks are different from them.
My deceased husband had these when we married in 1980 and I think he had to get them between 1974 and 1980, otherwise his ex-wife would have kept them. I found William McArthur as the inventor of the Splade but that is all I have found on him. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The images were cut off at the important places...that is why I had to use the URL. This is of the knife...

Fork...... http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2n8y5ar&s=7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Spoon....http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2nk5hqo&s=7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope this will help someone help me. I am at a loss on these.

Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forum.

First mark was used by Josepph Elliot & Sons of Sheffield.

Second mark was used by John Round & Sons before 1897.

Thank you so much for your help. I'm sorry, I not good with the pc terminology...Do you mean post one picture per post? If so, please forgive my misunderstanding. I cannot believe the link you sent me. I have looked through all pages on this site over and over again and never did I see the image on the silverplate you linked me to. i thought I went through all the alphabet on that page also. Guess my senior eyes played out on me.
With your knowledge, do you think it is strange for all 3 items to be all together in one silverware box? The 2nd and 3rd pictures have the same pattern on the fronts, but different marks on the back. Any suggestions?
Again, I thank you so much for your information.

Hi Betsy. You're welcome.

One item / one set of marks per post.
More than one picture is fine. Usually one of the mark and a couple of the whole item.

We don't see the first mark very often. Did not have a good picture of it till now.
Don't know who used the third mark.

The three pieces probably date to the same period, before 1897.
In 1897 the use of a crown in a cartouche on British silverplate was banned.

Hi Pat: Thanks again for your help. All these items are in a beautiful wood box with a "gold" inlay with the following: C A MANNERS 1870. Any books or other suggestions you might have for me to locate that 3rd mark?
