unknown hallmark and makers mark on beaker

Post by trevorg »

Hi,
I recently purchased at auction the silver beaker shown in the images. The rim is at fault, probably due to age. I cannot determine the hallmarks or its age or country of origin. Can anyone help please?
The auction description was:
A silver beaker, possibly 18th century, the tapering cylindrical beaker with embossed architectural arches design and stylised flower heads below a crimped rim (at fault).

If I got the image sizes wrong then I apologise...it is my first time on the site.

Thanks.

Hi Trev,

Thank you for the welcome and your response. This is really helpful and will now give me a starting point.
Having read through previously innumerable posts on this site, on such a diverse range of subjects, I am amazed at the wealth and depth of knowledge available.
Being a relative newcomer I will post my research findings as they unfold for discussion/validation.

Cheers,
Trevor

All,

I have found a web site posting (on what looks like an early version of this site) with a response from Blakstone who is a member of this site. This posting has a beaker that is remarkably similar to mine in style and embossing, although mine does not have the handles. The web site link is below:

Clearly Blakstone has a wealth of knowledge on this and could possibly identify the maker from his library. I am unsure if he will read this posting and so I will send him a private message with the hope he will respond to this posting for all to see.

Cheers,
Trevor

Hopefully Blakstone will be able to furnish the missing information.

Here is a couple of earlier replies to a similar questions: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... &t=20034&p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10563" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Unfortunately, I am traveling right now. (Well, not so unfortunate for me!) I'll check my references when I return home.
