Silver charger with Augsburg mark help

Post by Roger Kent »

This is a silver charger measuring nearly 13" X 11" with Augsburg hallmarks. I am trying to find out who the mark HD conjoined belongs to. Also, are the hallmarks on this charger legitimate, or is this the work of the Hanau makers using psudo hallmarks? These (last picture) are the only hallmarks found on this charger. Would there be a loth mark somewhere if this is truly mid-17th cent? Thank you for your answers.

Hello, and thank you. Which mark do you think is not Augsburg? The Augsburg pineapple erect mark on the right, in my picture, was in use from 1650 to 1660. Why are you showing me marks from other centuries? I just need to know if it is a 19th cent psudo mark by Hanau or not. And who the maker HD might be. Thank you again.

Hi Rogerkent,

Salver with pseudo marks and no legal silver hallmarks.

Please look closely at the mark of Hermanus van Delden & Zoon. Compare your rectangle 'square' with the original square of van Delden and compare the letters HD. Your H looks more compact and your H lags the space between the two vertical lines and last but not least your D differs.

Why are the Dutch lion Passant and the Dutch assay office mark missing? How do we now the item is made of silver without any legal hallmarks? Sorry but I believe the salver has not been made by a Dutch silver smith and could be silver plated.

Hello RogerKent,

There is no Augsburg I that looks like this I. Maker HD is not listed in Selings Augsburger Gold- und Silberschmiede. Looks like false marks. A test for the content of the silver could learn the probability that the scale is older than 19e century.
