how to photograph inside of ring

Post by rain »

hello... I have a ring that I would like to post a pic of to obtain any info on the age, make, etc.. problem is, while I can make out the words sterling, I am unable to photograph the inside to post here. It is a diamond engagement ring that belonged to my great grandmother. I would like to have professionally cleaned and resized to fit me... any suggestions? Can I post the ring itself or must I find a way to take a picture of the inside first?

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

If you cannot capture a clear image of the mark, try drawing what you see and photograph the drawing and then post along with a photo of the piece itself.

The best method is to use a "macro" (close-up) lens, a ring flash and a tripod. The lens I use is a 100mm macro (f/2.8) but set it to a high aperature (smaller opening)of around f/11, which will give a greater deapth of field. I recommend a ring flash since it fits around your camera lens and eliminates most shadows. The tripod is to allow you to set your camera at a certain distance and then not have it move. It is hard to hand hold a really close-up shot. If you don't have a macro lens they do make close up filters that you can screw on to the front of your lens. You can also try a direct light source such as a lamp if needed. Good luck.

Place your ring on a small mirror and photograph it - the mark will be reflected and much easier to read. Good luck!
