is this austria hungary mark?

Post by tonyatl »

i have a pair of silver candelabra for which i am seeking confirmation of mark and dating. if i am interpreting the hallmark properly it would be austria-hungary pre 1866. can anyone confirm? unfortunately i cannot read the year if indeed those 4 marks represent years. possibly 1840?

The hallmark is from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and used 1825-1902. It is difficult to see the year but to me it also looks like 1840. The A is the cipher for Vienna and 13 means 13 Loth i.e. the silver fineness ~813/1000. Unfortunately the maker is unknown to me. Let's hope somebody else can tell you that.

A minor amendment. The mark was used 1825-1866 not 1902, sorry

Hi,

Around 1840 there are about two identified masters in Vienna who used the mark AW with this contour: Andreas Weichesmueller and Anton Wayand. Apart from these two there are at least 5 unidentified master with AW in this contour (without a dot). Waltraud Neuwirth (Wiener Silber 1781-1866) says that not all the marks are found. A lot of AW ("im Rechteck" without a dot) marks in Vienna are still a riddle.

Regards,
