19th Century French Silver/Vermeil Spoon Identification

Post by Johnnies2000 »

I have a very unique spoon that I am trying to identify but have been unsuccessful so far. What I have been able to determine is that it is french made and possibly a berry spoon. I am 99% positive that I have identified the Hallmark on the right side of the blade as Minerva(2) which is from the French 1838 and depicts 800/1000 Silver. The Makr's Mark is a capital leter L and Capital Letter P on either side of a flower or rose and is set inside of a diamond. It is a Silver handle with a vermeil blade (gold plated silver). I am trying to find out some history on this piece and if there is any (admin edit - see Posting Requirements )
The handle is so ornate and unique that I have yet to find anything close to it. Your help is greatly appreciated.

To add to this response, Labat & Pugibet succeeded their uncle, the maker Joseph Adoue. Labat & Pugibet worked in Paris at 84, rue Quincampoix from 29 November 1877 until 19 January 1897. François Labat continued the business on his own until 23 January 1920. Labat & Pugibet were wholesale jobbers who supplied the department store L’Escalier de Cristal with flatware. I agree that this is a berry serving spoon.

In terms of style this is a neo-Renaissance pattern. David Allan in his book on 19th C French flatware shows a set of 12 silver and vermeil teaspoons by this maker in a similar style with openwork handles and mascarons on the terminal ends (p. 119).

Thank you all so much for helping. This really helps me narrow down the origins of this piece. I did locate the patterns that you mentioned JayT, but still not this one in particular. I kind of enjoy the treasure hunt to find out.
