Sorry, don't know how to upload pictures, but have a link. I have a baby sterling silver cup made by Wood & Huges. As you can see in the picture, it has the WwH STERLING 166 A mark on it. My question is W&H had a few hallmarks, how can I date this piece? I'm sure I can't get an exact year, but can I get a rough decade? Pre-Civil War? Post? I researched the babies name on the cup and it looks as if he was born in New York to some English immigrants in 1887, so I would assume the cup would have been made around that time. I don't think they had cups just sitting on the shelf in inventory for years.
Another question if I may. I have been picking up cups for a few years now, haven't really started seriously gotten into collecting sterling, but it is very interesting to me. What are some good sites, books to get started. I'm looking for something to point me into educating me on pieces that are rare or hard to find or collectible. I'm pretty sure Tiffany is up there, everyone knows that. What I would like to concentrate on is mainly Early American, 1700s and 1800s. Some pointers would be grateful.
