French (?) travelpowderset

Post by zilverik »

Hi,

This travelpowderset I bought in Paris long ago. That is why I think it is French. There is only one mark that I couldn't dentify, but it looks 18e century French to me. The whole set can be dismanteld into different parts. The one end is just a little bit wider than the other end. Very ingenius. There is still some rouge in one of the parts. I have never seen it before or after I bought it.

Regards,

Zilverik

Hi Smokanabeach,

It's very, very small (1 x 1,5 mm). I made some phot's of the same mark from different angles.
As I see it, it could be a dogs head. The photo's are more clear than my loupe.

Regards,

Zilverik

Couldn't it be a boar?... It is really difficult to see on this small pics...

Nevertheless is there an hallmark for the silversmith (initials in a diamond)? It could be another way to find the origin of your travelpowderset...

Hi Smokanabeach,

Unfortunately this is the only mark and it's only on one part. No makersmark. Maybe just an importmark.

Hi zilverik, judging from your item (dated from the XX I think), the head of boar is the only answer I could find as logical and similar as for a french silver hallmark but... is it really french? ;-))

Regards.

Hi Smokanabeach,

Yes, it could be another country. The fact that till now nobody recognizes this item and this mark gives that indication. I don't think that this box is to be found as from 20e century. For the style I think it is more early 19e century. It is meant for rouge on the face. That was already a habit in very early days. Maybe a collector of these kind of objects knows more?
