This silver box has been passed down my family from Lady Alice Clarke who was married to Sir Thomas Basil Clarke (my great grandfather) who did work for the british government and who also wrote speeches for King George V, i am interested to know if the crest has any meaning on it? The markings under the box have a lion with six sides pointing right a six pointed star a crown with the number 0 underneath and a box with the number 13 beside it. Any help greatly appreciated
Kind Regards,
Alan Taylor.

Re: Help needed...
A clearer image of the marks may help provide some clues.
From what can be seen so far, the marks are Dutch.

Hi,
Difficult to say due to the unclear image, but like Trev says; Dutch silver with the Dutch lion facing the right way above 2;the Dutch standard mark for silver 833/1000 fineness or 83.3% pure silver, this standard mark used 1814-1953. I believe the maker’s mark to be; H13 in a rectangle for; Philip Hovingh, located in the city of Nieuwe Pekela, Dutch province of Groningen, during the years 1832/1851. Philip is known to have used pseudo marks; like the six pointed star and the crowned O and many other pseudo marks to give his work the ‘antique silver look of the Guilds’
I you closely examine your item, you might find a Dutch date letter and the Minerva head or assay office mark with the letter E in its helmet for regional assay office Groningen.
Please see for more information Hooykaas and Hovingh;
