Hamilton & Co and Pittar & Co

Post by mari-azur »

I hope there is someone who can assist me. I am researching Robert Hamilton, who founded Hamilton & Co in Calcutta in 1807 under licence from the East India Company. Once he had returned to the UK in 1812 and then ended his interest in the company in 1817, he seems to have continued working.
According to this on-line encyclopedia he was probably was involved with the Pittars in Pittar & Co, but the site does not state what enidence there is for this. I know that he sponsored Isaac Pittar to travel to India in 1822 and Parke Pittar I in 1825. After that I am a bit lost.

Familty history has it that he had to return to England because of a dubious business deal that involving gems. But I do not know how true this is. He is also thought to have acted as an agent to his father-in-law, John Mainwaring, who had a jewellry buisness at 8 Chichester Rents, Chancry Lane, London.

Most of the information I have on him comes from Wynyard Wilkinson, but I have very little else. I am interesed in find out who financed him to go to India, why he returned to the Uk, if the story is true, and what his relationship with the Pittars was.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

I can't help with your question, but the below three posts have some information on the Pittar family:
