The origin of Russian silver worldwide

Post by AG2012 »

In contrary to common belief, the evacuation of refugees and their resettlement during and after the revolution was not always chaotic but was organized, the most important being from the Crimea in 1920 (civilians, military personnel). The first destination was Turkey, then various European countries. Although Crimea changed hands a number of times it was a stronghold of the anti-Bolshevik White Army and Crimea route was used throughout the civil war. Financing the war, military representatives in foreign countries and later maintenance of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, including construction of churches and even military schools demanded substantial financial support. Among other sources, pawnshops (lombards) were evacuated from Russia — including huge amount of silver. Many countries did don recognize USSR for years and pawnshops sold the items in several European countries as late as thirties 20th century.
In conclusion, a HUGE AMOUNT of Russian silver was evacuated from the country and later sold elsewhere.
