Do You Recognize This Device?

Post by dognose »

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can cast any light on the origin of this lapel badge?

Made by Vaughton & Sons and assayed at Birmingham in 1908, the device contains an 'R' above a crossed pair of fiddle pattern spoons and an Ace of Diamonds playing card. Perhaps a membership badge to a dining and gambling club.

As can be seen in the lower image, the back is also struck with an extra Lion Passant, an indicator perhaps that the backplate was removable, although the badge shows no sign of this.

One other thought does cross my mind, perhaps this was never a badge, but one of a pair of very personalised cuff links belonging to an Edwardian gentleman who was fond of eating and gambling.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hello Trev

As far as I know Vaughtons are still in business and maybe they have old records of products which might help in identification?

Thanks Mike. If we have no success here, then I'll try that route.

Hi AG2012,

Well found! Looking closely at the minor imperfections in the photograph, and comparing them with my badge, they are indeed one of the same piece.

I wonder if it might be something to do with the temperance movement. "Richmond Tea and Bridge Club" for instance.

Hi Miles,

That's an interesting thought, and may account for the two crossed spoons, rather than a knife and fork, that would be more likely, perhaps to represent a catering establishment than two spoons would.
