Mark in Cyrillic, but not Russian,13 Loth
Mark in Cyrillic, but not Russian,13 Loth
I really enjoy rare European marks.Six tea spoons bought for research purposes.Maker БОГДÐÐОВИЪ and 13 Loths. Does not look Russian; more probably provincial Austria — Hungary, but this 13 Loth mark is not registered anywhere. Looks like a cross with four C.Another mark — an eagle’s head? with A. Did the maker make his own 13 Loth mark? Where?

This doesn't take you any further but I think the last letter of the name is a K, which makes more sense than a hard sign which should not follow a vowel, i.e. Bogdanovik.
Re: Mark in Cyrillic, but not Russian,13 Loth
Yes,that makes sense, not Russian.Cyrillic alphabets on Google;really many countries and nations use it.Have excluded non-European nations (13 Loth).
The last letter may be the clue.Thank you.

Re: Mark in Cyrillic, but not Russian,13 Loth
Searched further; the only letter in Cyrillic similar to K at the end is Ћ in Serbian
alphabet! The next clue was Trev`s help with Garrard frame and Serbian coat of arms; the same cross and four letters C, or whatever. Then in Tardy page 373 ``Serbie importation``: the mark with A is lion’s head actually (1882-1919). It must be that: rare find. Most probably the maker imported spoons from Austria- Hungary, paid duty and used his own mark.
Thank you again; you helped a lot excluding Russian Ъ.

Interesting. Glad to have been of a little help even though you were left with the real work.

Hello AG2012 and agphile.
I think, I found the solution for this question.
I found a tea spoon, and the guild mark is very similar to these.
It's Beograd, and as we can see, it's a different master, Jovan Nikolits.

I hope, it helps!
Best Regards!

Re: Mark in Cyrillic, but not Russian,13 Loth
There is distinctive ‚‚13‚‚ loth. They must have been apprentices in Austria-Hungary Empire and returned back or opened workshops after the Turks had left.I would say it`s close to mid 19th. century or a few decades later. There was obviously no legislation where they worked at the time so they used marks incorporating both Austria-Hungary standard and other marks the way they found appropriate. It may not be too important for the rest of Europe but it shows the influence of well legislated Hungarian empire (not only with silver) in almost every aspect of civilized and well organized society (silversmith guilds included).

Hello AG2012!
There is a distinctive 13 lot marking, but the principles of the marks is the same.
I think, that you agree with me, that mutation in the hallmark could happen between any decade.
I have several examples from the Austrian-Hungarian empire, as the german areas too!
Best regards!

Hi,
``MD``on the left is unknown to me.
Two spoons were made by STOICH (Belgrade).
Obviously apprentice in Hungary and self designed mark with ``13``. There was no guild in Belgrade.

The spoon on the left is made by Michael Dietrich in the Pest silversmith Guild.
I believe it to you, that wasn't silversmith guild in Belgrade, but the hallmark shows obviously the simbols of the coat of arms of Belgrade. The only reason, that I can imagine, that the makers made there these spoons.
Best regards!
