Box

Post by TheSandDancer »

I am new to the site and I am loving it here.

I have had in my possession for some time a neat little box with very intricate work on it. You can see the detailing on the first pic. But I know it is foreign because it has an import mark. But the makers mark stumps me. The mark is an "S" above a "J & J"

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum. It's good to hear that you are enjoying your time here.

The mark is 'J.S over M.J'. Who used the mark is unknown to me, but they were noted as being an importer of silverwares in the 1960's, and using the services of the London Assay Office.

Hopefully someone else can identify the sponsor's mark.

Hi

Thanks for the welcome. I don't buy unknown silver now. It is all solid English silver. But when I first began I collected a lot of '925' and 'EPNS' silver. But I like the detailing so much on this one I must keep it.

As for the mark I am sure it is "S" over "J & J". But the quality is 923 which is the next mark to the right of the maker. The one to the right of that is a strange mark. A circle and a line running through it to the centre from the bottom. The last one to the right of that is a small case 's"

Hi,

I think you'll find that the sponsor's mark has been struck on a 10 o'clock/4 o'clock angle.

Check here for the London import mark: http://www.925-1000.com/importmarks.html

The mark is JS & MJ (still unidentified) and I think that the date letter is the 1992 S. I am in process of revising my dates-seen for this maker to 2001-2004 as I think that I must have misread the e for 2004 for that of 1960, having recently seen an example with a 2001 hallmark.

Hi welcome to the forum.
You could ask the The goldsmiths Company: http://www.thegoldsmiths.co.uk/

You send a clear image of the maker’s or importer/sponsor's mark & hallmarks and they will help you, free of charge. Please inform us of the outcome.
Send your mail to:
