Egypt

Post by Jag »

This seems to be Egyptian (though I would have guessed African based on my limited knowledge of jewelry styles), and based on the middle and righthand marks and the link in previous posts it's from 1982. But I can't find an indication of what the silver percentage is, or where in Egypt it is from?

I find it interesting that the hallmarks are made very visible - on the front and not the back of the piece. The last pic shows that there may be a further mark on some of the beads. I can try to get a better pic if that seems like it could be a decipherable mark>?

The mark to the left of the lotus flower is for .600 silver standard.

In the same mark, the city is just above the .600, and looks like Alexandria or perhaps Cairo. A better pair of eyes (or cleaning the bracelet) might be required.

Thank you very much for the reply. Looking around, it seems that this is a Bedouin style bracelet; maybe that is responsible for the low silver content used. Can I ask if you have a source that shows the symbols used for the different cities?

I think the Egyptian city marks are well known, other sites show them and even Divis lists them as 1983-1994 in Silver Marks of the World.

Egypt is about half a world away from my primary area (the Far East), but you may be right about the bracelet being Bedouin. The bracelet may have been produced for the local market and therefore the lower silver content would make the bracelet stronger and more affordable.
